Farmer's Note
Our family has been growing teas for generations. I chose to grow this Taiwanese variety here because a friend introduced it to me over 20 years ago. Although it is difficult to care for due to its soft branches, it is known for its rich, juicy flavor as well as beautiful tea leaves. We use no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers, not even organic fertilizers.
The tea garden sits at an altitude of 2,000 meters. The tea bushes enjoy a subtropical monsoon climate with mild winters. Rainfall is plentiful and the rainy season here is long, so even though the tea leaves are harvested in early spring per one-bud-and-two-leaf plucking standard, they require a lengthy withering step before they can be electric roasted in the summer to set this nuanced red tea. Tea farming is incredibly arduous. My only wish is that my college-aged son doesn't become a tea farmer and instead pursues a career in the city.
